About the Center

The Center for a World in Balance is a global cooperative initiative that focuses on key interconnected problem areas our world faces and develops a common and coherent answer to these problems. The various crises we are facing today - financial, economic, social, human rights, and environmental - cannot be tackled using mechanisms or institutions that allowed these crises to occur. We need a new set of values and new guiding principles that work for all of us.

A world in balance is a world where the economy serves the public interest, where people respect and care for each other and live in accordance with the natural environment.

The Center’s core activities are rights-based, both substantive and procedural; they include the promotion of civil and political rights as well as economic, social and cultural rights while stressing their indivisibility. Its objectives are described in the Declaration of Principles.

The Center’s holistic approach acknowledges the inseparability of man and nature, our common humanity and the need to find a structural balance in the relations and activities of human life on a living planet. It also addresses human nature, both as a potentially positive active force in the organization of society through moral progress, and the way human nature is developing out of a variety of autopoietic economic processes – which are at present often exploitative and destructive. The Center aims to empower the public to think critically and to move beyond ignorance, malpractice and deception and into the realm of understanding, equality and respect.

The Center is a not-for-profit foundation funded by the public. It is your strong support that preserves our continued independence and strength.
